SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP/BCN) — A 17-year-old girl died after she fell from a cliff and went into the water at Lands End in San Francisco Thursday evening.

San Francisco fire officials say the girl was walking with friends around 6 p.m. when she lost her footing and fell at least 50 feet to the rocks below, along the surf’s edge.

Rescuers couldn’t immediately reach her from land, so had to get to her via Jet-Ski in the water.

“Strong and treacherous search conditions” initially hampered the rescue crew’s ability to reach the victim but ultimately “crews fought aggressively and got to the victim,” Fire Department spokesman Jonathan Baxter said.

When they reached her she was still breathing, but died in an ambulance on the way to a hospital.

Crews with the U.S. National Park Service assisted the fire department with the rescue operation.

Braves Hit 4 Homers, Use 8-Run 5th To Hold Off Giants

ATLANTA (AP) — Lane Adams says he believes the baseball cliche that hitting is contagious.

In the Braves’ biggest inning in six years, the hot hitting spread all the way to his spot on the bench.

Adams delivered a pinch-hit, three-run homer in Atlanta’s eight-run fifth inning and the Braves held off San Francisco in the ninth to beat the Giants 12-11 in a rain-delayed game Thursday night.

It was the Braves’ most runs in an inning since they scored eight in the ninth at the Dodgers on April 19, 2011. Their nine hits in the inning were their most since April 7, 2004, when they had nine in the fourth against the Mets.

“When one guy gets going, the rest fall in line,” Adams said. “… It was a great inning.”

The big inning left Atlanta with a 12-6 lead. Braves manager Brian Snitker said the eight-run inning “was great” because “we needed them all.”

The homer was the first of Adams’ career.

The Braves won three of four in the series to cap San Francisco’s 1-7 road trip.

“You can look at the good things and the silver linings, but the bottom line is we lost seven games,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “That’s not a good trip.”

The Giants, last in the NL West, have lost nine of 10. They gave the Braves a scare by scoring two runs off closer Jim Johnson in the ninth.

“That was big,” said Hunter Pence, who had two hits but hit a groundout to second base to end the game with two runners on base. “Unfortunately we weren’t able to finish it off. We battled pretty hard this whole game.”

Brandon Phillips led off the Braves’ big inning with a homer off Matt Cain (3-7), the first of six straight hits.

The Braves and Giants combined for seven homers, including four by Atlanta, and 31 hits. Nick Markakis had four hits, including a two-run homer in the first. Matt Adams hit his third homer of the series, and 13th of the season, in the fourth.

Buster Posey drove in three runs with a homer and two doubles for San Francisco. Joe Panik led off the fifth with a homer. Brandon Belt hit his 13th homer off Ian Krol in the eighth.

Jaime Garcia allowed six runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. Rookie Jason Hursh (1-0) recorded the final two outs in the fifth for his first major league win.

Johnson gave one-out singles to Nick Hundley and Denard Span in the ninth before walking Belt to load the bases. Hundley scored on Kelby Tomlinson’s fielder’s choice grounder, and Panik’s fly ball to left field cut the lead to one run.

Johnson earned his 14th save in 19 chances.

Rain delayed the start of the game for the second straight night. The delay lasted 1 hour, 26 minutes.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Giants: Bochy said a decision will be made soon on IF Conor Gillaspie, who has missed 32 games with back spasms. A move with Gillaspie could be connected to the status of 3B Eduardo Nunez (left hamstring), who likely would need to show improvement Friday to avoid the DL.

STRUGGLES FOR CAIN

Cain doubled in two runs in the second, but he couldn’t hold a 5-2 lead. Cain fell to 0-5 in eight road starts as he allowed seven runs and 10 hits in four innings. He gave up a season-high three homers.

UP NEXT

Giants: LHP Ty Blach (4-4, 4.23) will start in the opening game of a home weekend series in his first career appearance against the Mets on Friday night.

Warriors Acquire Oregon Forward Jordan Bell In NBA Draft

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Golden State Warriors didn’t have a pick in Thursday night’s draft but they moved quickly when the opportunity to grab a player they wanted came up.

The NBA champions acquired Oregon forward Jordan Bell from the Chicago Bulls in exchange for financial considerations. The Bulls selected the 6-foot-9 225-pounder with the 38th pick in the second round.

“He’s one of the few guys we looked at and really wanted to see if we could get,” Warriors general manager Bob Myers said. “I actually was not optimistic we would be able to get him, but somehow it came to fruition.”

Bell averaged 10.9 points and 8.8 rebounds and was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year in his junior year at Oregon, which advanced to the Final Four this season.

“There’s a lot of things we liked about him,” Myers said. “We got a chance to speak to him and he’s excited. He’s kind of learning under a pretty good group of veterans and we’re thrilled. Everybody we talked to had quite a few good things to say about him.”

The Warriors had no picks going into the draft. They sent their first- and second-round picks to the Utah Jazz in a 2013 three-way trade in which they acquired Andre Iguodala from the Denver Nuggets.

The Warriors’ main focus this summer is to keep intact the nucleus of a team that just beat LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in five games in the third Finals meeting between the two teams in as many years.

Finals MVP Kevin Durant can opt out of his contract to restructure a deal that would give Golden State some flexibility in contract negotiations with free agents such as Iguodala or Shaun Livingston — two key members of the two title teams.

Stephen Curry is expected to receive a contract worth more than $200 million but also has said he will do what he can to allow the Warriors to re-sign their free agents.

Extra Security In Place For San Francisco Pride Parade

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Security measures put in place at last year’s Pride celebrations in San Francisco following the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando will remain in place this year, authorities said.

Those attending the Pride Festival at the city’s Civic Center on Saturday and Sunday should expect to be screened by walk-through metal detectors or handheld “wands” and be subject to searches of their persons and possession, according to police.

No bags larger than 18 by 18 inches will be allowed, and all bags are subject to search. There will be no storage lockers for oversized bags.

No outside alcohol will be allowed inside and possession of open containers or consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited on city streets. Inside the event area, alcohol will be available for purchase with valid identification.

Police will step up the number of both uniformed and plainclothes officers at events throughout the weekend including Sunday’s Parade, which starts at 10:30 a.m.

Shootings and other violent incidents have occurred during a number of past Pride celebrations, including a fatal shooting at the 2010 “Pink Saturday” event in the Castro District. That event was canceled last year due to security concerns and will not be returning this year.

Police this week advised those planning to attend festivities, to avoid accepting drinks from strangers or drinking and driving, to keep valuables with them rather than leaving them in the car and or elsewhere and to stay with a group of friends when on the street or leaving bars and clubs.

Pride-goers were also strongly urged to take public transit to and from events wherever possible. Both Muni and Caltrain will provide additional service on Sunday for the parade.

For more information on security screening, check out the San Francisco Pride website http://www.sfpride.org/celebration/.

SAN PABLO (CBS SF) — San Pablo announced late Friday morning that a man suspected in two recent bank robberies was arrested as he attempted to rob a check-cashing business.

Police on Friday said that the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Avaun Price, was taken into custody outside of a Money Mart on San Pablo Avenue early Thursday evening.

Police said the suspect had handed a note to the employee demanding cash and claiming to have a weapon. Officers detained the suspect as he exited the business and took him into custody.

Price is suspected of being responsible for two bank robberies earlier this month.

According to police, Price walked into Chase Bank at 14330 San Pablo Ave. on June 13th at approximately 12:40 p.m. and handed a note to the teller demanding cash and claiming to have a weapon. After receiving the money, the suspect fled the scene.

Then on June 20, Price conducted a similar robbery at Citibank at 201 San Pablo Towne Center. Detectives obtained video surveillance footage of the suspect in a nearby liquor store following one of the robberies.

The suspect was described as a black male, approximately 30 years old, 5’8 – 6’0 feet tall, medium build, with a full trimmed beard.

He has distinctive tattoos on his neck (lips), left shoulder (praying hands), right forearm (unknown script), and on the back of his neck (unknown). The suspect was wearing a reflective orange and yellow vest that was discarded after the second robbery.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Sergeant Barajas of the San Pablo Police Department at (510) 215-3150 or call the Crime Stoppers Tip line, (510) 799-8255. All calls can remain anonymous.

California Bans State Travel to More States

SACRAMENTO (AP) — California’s attorney general blocked state-funded travel to Texas and three other states on Thursday in response to what he considers anti-LGBT rights laws enacted this year.

Democratic Attorney General Xavier Becerra added Texas, Alabama, South Dakota and Kentucky to the list of places where state employee travel is restricted. Lawmakers passed legislation last year banning non-essential travel to states with laws that discriminate against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. North Carolina, Kansas, Mississippi and Tennessee are already on the list.

California taxpayers’ money “will not be used to let people travel to states who chose to discriminate,” Becerra said.

It’s unclear what practical effect California’s travel ban will have. The state law contains exemptions for some trips, such as travel needed to enforce California law and to honor contracts made before 2017. Travel to conferences or out-of-state trainings are examples of trips that could be blocked. Becerra’s office couldn’t provide information about how often state employees have visited the newly banned states.

Texas was added to the list because of a law that lets child welfare organizations deny services and adoptions to families because of “sincerely held religious beliefs” that Becerra’s office says would allow LGBT discrimination. Similar laws were enacted in Alabama and South Dakota. Kentucky’s new law could allow LGBT discrimination in schools, according to Becerra’s office.

“California may be able to stop their state employees, but they can’t stop all the businesses that are fleeing over taxation and regulation and relocating to Texas,” said John Wittman, a spokesman for Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican.

Fresno State, a public California university, is scheduled to play football against the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa this fall. A request for a legal opinion on whether public university sports’ travel is exempt from the ban has been filed with Becerra’s office, but no ruling has been issued.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey’s press office did not have an immediate comment.

Writer: Stephen Beresford
Starring: Bill Nighy, Dominic West, Imelda Staunton and Paddy Considine

About The Movie:

When movies are based on actual events, they can enlighten, educate and inspire. But sometimes, they can exploit and exaggerate. Once in a while we get lucky with the former. “Pride” is a film that’s not only is based on reality, but leaves us feeling better about the world. The year is 1984 and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher is at war with mining unions all over the U.K. At the same time, a small but earnest gay population is fighting for human rights. A decision is made within the LBGT Community: Let’s join the striking miners, beginning in a small town, and show the world that we are on the side of the oppressed. When this group ends up in a small mining town in Wales, they meet traditional, confused and even outraged people though some, like the characters played by Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton, welcome them. It’s a story that reminds us of our similarities instead of our differences, of our compassion and ability to help others.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Students at San Francisco’s St. Ignatius College Preparatory high school were in mourning Friday after a classmate was killed in a tumble off a cliff at Land’s End.

The students parents were sent an email early Friday informing them of the death of 17-year-old Victoria La Rocca.

“We mourn her loss and ask you to pray for her entire family and friends,” the email read. “Please keep Tori and her entire family in your prayers in their hour of need.”

La Rocca died after she fell from a cliff and went into the water at Lands End Thursday evening.

Business Productivity: 3 Reasons To Avoid Micromanaging

$
0
0

Micromanagement is a style of management where the manager closely watches and controls the work done by his or her employees to make sure tasks are done precisely and in accordance with how the higher ups want it done. While this technique may seem logical to those in charge, it is not the ideal way to run a company. Managing well requires delicate skills, which lead to balancing decisions that work best for the overall goals of the company without forgetting that your workers are human. With all of the management methods to use, why is micromanaging a bad idea? Start by looking at these three reasons to avoid micromanaging.

Employees are people not machines

Your employees are people, not machines. This means that they come willing to work, but also have all of the personalities and emotions that make up a human being, and tend to work best when they feel that their work is valued rather than up for critique. Rather than crushing their potential with constant looking over their shoulders and criticism when they fall short of high demands, empower them with the skills and confidence they need to get the job done well. Entrepreneur offers suggestions for how to stop micromanaging your team, and explains how employees who feel as if they play an important role in the company tend to work harder and offer valuable contributions.

You have lost control

If you don’t stop micromanaging, you will be the one overworked. It will lead to your own exhaustion and burn out as a boss. A true leader knows the art of delegating tasks, which means the manager is the one overseeing the work that others complete. This requires trust and skill in knowing who to assign to what job. Keep in mind that your employees were hired because of their qualifications and experience to do the job at hand. So, instead of micromanaging, provide proper training and then step back to oversee their efforts giving praise for achievements and jobs well done.

Productivity is lost

When workers fear failure or criticism due to micromanagement of their tasks, it tends to bring productivity to a screeching halt. The reason for this is that for some workers, the fear of being reprimanded for lack of attention to minute details often paralyzes the ability to even get started on the job at hand. For others, knowing that a boss is constantly looking over their shoulders, causes them to not try to achieve higher goals since everything they do is going to be redone or done for them anyway by the micromanager. Others begin to resent it and quit altogether, which means you have to start from scratch at hiring and training.

Lighten the load and stress that goes hand-in-hand with micromanaging, and begin to trust your employees to do the job they were hired to do. Truth be told, there are more than three reasons to avoid micromanaging. In the short run, this might mean better training to ensure they are equipped to succeed with their tasks at hand. In the long run, ditching the idea of looking over the shoulder and taking note of every minute detail of the work being done will result in better productivity and employees who are encouraged to go the extra mile instead of feeling crushed under the thumb of micromanagement control.

Beehive Heists Lead To Felony Charges

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Two California men have been charged with a string of felony counts stemming from a criminal case that created a buzz among beekeepers across the country, authorities said Thursday.

The men charged with possessing more than 1,200 stolen beehives could each spend more than a decade in jail if convicted, the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office said.

The case stems from a tip in April that led investigators to Pavel Tveretinov, 51, and Vitaliy Yeroshenko, 48, at work among stacks of mismatched beehives on a field outside Fresno.

Bees are a key part of the agriculture industry in California, the nation’s most productive farming state. Beekeepers from around the country truck in their beehives and rent them to farmers to pollinate their flowering crops, such as almonds.

Investigators have said the beehives had been stolen during the night over more than two years from orchards in several California counties. The victims were beekeepers as far away as Missouri, Montana and North Dakota.

The two Sacramento-area men are charged with nine felony counts of receiving stolen property.

While announcing the break in the case in May, Fresno County Sheriff’s investigators said they had netted 2,500 stolen beehives valued at nearly $1 million.

Charges filed by prosecutors on Thursday, however, estimate 1,200 beehives valued at $200,000. Prosecutors based their charges on the reports they received from investigators, said Geri Benavides, a spokeswoman for the office.

An attorney representing Yeroshenko could not be reached by The Associated Press for comment. Authorities have issued a warrant seeking his arrest.

Defense attorney Andrew Kalnoki dismissed the validity of the case filed against Tveretinov, who was booked into jail with bail set at $267,750.

“The charges have no factual or legal basis,” Kalnoki said. “We are going to put forth a very vigorous defense.”

SUNNYVALE (CBS SF) — A southbound train hit and killed a man on the tracks at the Caltrain station in Sunnyvale Friday morning, Caltrain officials said.

Train No. 218 hit the man at 8:21 a.m. at the station, which is located at 121 W. Evelyn Ave.

The station’s southbound platform remains closed to passengers, but the northbound platform was reopened by 12:45 p.m.

Trains were initially single-tracking, causing delays of up to 45 minutes, but by 12:10 p.m. had begun double-tracking and are now back on schedule.

The man’s identity has not been released by the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office. None of the 60 or so passengers on board the train were injured.

Raiders Ink Carr To Record Contract Extension

$
0
0

ALAMEDA (CBS SF & AP) — Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr had a $125 million smile on his face Friday morning as he signed a contract extension that made him the highest paid player in the NFL.

“This is a big day for Raiders nation,” said Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie. “We are very excited to have Derek be a part of this organization officially for many more years…We know Derek is a big part of what we are trying to do around here.”

The Raiders 2014 second round draft pick has evolved into one of the NFL’s best young quarterback and had Oakland streamrolling into the post season until a broken leg sidelined him in late December.

“I’m blessed and honored to be sitting here today,” Carr told reporters Friday. “I dreamed about this day as a little kid and it’s here…You can’t pay me a bigger compliment to tell me you trust me with the keys (to the franchise).”

With their leader sidelined, the Raiders stumbled badly and lost in the AFC wildcard game.

The Raiders are counting on Carr to be the face of the franchise when it moves to Las Vegas for the 2020 season and are paying him that way. The 5-year, $125 million deal is one of the richest contract ever in the NFL, beating out the $24.8 million a year Andrew Luck got from Indianapolis.

The pact is even backloaded to allow Carr to avoid Nevada state taxes when the team moves.

But Carr said he wanted to make sure the Raiders were not cash-strapped by his new deal.

“We figured out a way to do it so we have the opportunity to sign the other guys that are important to this organization,” Carr said. “That was really important to me. Not to just take every single dime that we could and I hope that that is known. Obviously, the position I play it has to be a certain number. That is just what it is but at the same time I told Tim (his agent) if we can structure it in a way to help the Raiders…That’s important to me.”

“For the kids out there it’s important for them to know that I never chase the money in this whole process. It’s something that I am every passionate about. I try to be the best version of myself every single day and give my teammates and this organization everything that I have. It’s never going to be about the money to me.”

Both sides had expressed a strong interest in signing a long-term deal with Carr, who was scheduled to enter the final year of his rookie contract. Carr had imposed a deadline of the start of training camp in late July.

Carr has transformed the Raiders from a perennial loser into a contender after being drafted in the second round in 2014. He was part of a stellar draft class led by AP Defensive Player of the Year Khalil Mack and third-round guard Gabe Jackson, who have been key to Oakland’s turnaround.

He lost his first 10 starts as a rookie before winning seven games his second year and taking the Raiders to the playoffs in 2016 with a 12-4 record. Carr missed the final game of that season and the playoff loss to Houston with a broken leg.

But he’s healed now and a major reason why the Raiders are the preseason favorites to win the AFC West and contenders to dethrone the New England Patriots as the top team in the conference.

Carr has thrown for 11,194 yards in his first three seasons and ranks fourth all-time with 81 touchdown passes through three years, trailing only Dan Marino, Luck and Peyton Manning. He has shown dramatic improvement each season in his career after an up-and-down rookie campaign when he threw 21 TD passes, but averaged only 5.5 yards per attempt.

Carr’s best season came in 2016 when he led seven fourth-quarter comebacks while completing a career-high 63.8 percent of his passes. He threw for 3,937 yards with 28 touchdowns and only six interceptions in just 15 games.

Depp Stirs Controversy With Presidential ‘Assassin’ Jokes At Festival

$

NEW YORK (AP) — Johnny Depp has sparked controversy for joking about assassinating Donald Trump during an appearance at a large festival in Britain, the latest example of artists using violent imagery when dealing with the president.

“When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?” Depp asked the crowd at Glastonbury Festival, in reference to the death of Abraham Lincoln by John Wilkes Booth in 1865.

The 54-year-old “Pirates of the Caribbean” star then added: “I want to qualify, I am not an actor. I lie for a living. However, it has been awhile and maybe it is time.”

The Secret Service in a statement said Friday it “is aware of the comments in question. For security reasons, we cannot discuss specifically nor in general terms the means and methods of how we perform our protective responsibilities.”

Depp was at the festival Thursday to introduce a screening of his 2004 film, “The Libertine.” He played Trump last year in a Funny or Die video parody of the businessman’s 1987 book, “The Art of the Deal.”

He seemed to know his comments were going to get him into trouble, prefacing his remarks with, “By the way, this is going to be in the press. It will be horrible.” Depp’s remarks came eight days after a gunman opened fire on Republican lawmakers as they practiced for a charity baseball game.

Depp’s remarks come weeks after The Public Theater in New York was criticized for its production of “Julius Caesar” that portrayed a Trump-like dictator in a business suit with a long tie who gets knifed to death onstage. The theater said it never advocates violence as a solution to political problems.

The show followed condemnation for comedian Kathy Griffin, who lost her job co-hosting CNN’s New Year’s Eve special and had all her upcoming comedy shows canceled after posing for a photograph in which she gripped a likeness of the president’s severed, bloody head. Pop star Madonna also was criticized for saying at a rally that she had thought “an awful lot about blowing up the White House.”

Musicians have also gone after the president, with a Snoop Dogg’s video of him shooting a Trump-lookalike clown and Moby putting out a video in which Trump resembles a Nazi-like Iron Man who takes over the world with a missile-firing machine shaped like a swastika and dollar symbol.

Trump’s election has not quieted many in the arts community who assailed the candidate, with Robert De Niro saying he’d “like to punch” Trump “in the face,” Carly Simon repurposing her song “You’re So Vain” into an anti-Trump anthem and singer-rapper Will.i.am’s damning video “GRAB’m by the ….”

Other presidents have found themselves the target of celebrity ire, including George W. Bush, who was attacked by the Dixie Chicks and by Kanye West, who famously said Bush “doesn’t care about black people.”

NASCAR Crew Chief’s Laptop Ripped Off In San Francisco

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) — Seven-time championship-winning crew chief Chad Knaus was oddly calm Friday even though his race notes for star driver Jimmie Johnson this weekend had been stolen from his rental car in San Francisco.

Knaus and his wife arrived in California on Wednesday night and headed to Fisherman’s Wharf for dinner. Knaus told The Associated Press they parked at a meter in a bustling area and were gone approximately 90 minutes.

When the couple returned, the right side passenger rear window of their SVU was smashed and their briefcases were gone. Their luggage was not stolen.

In one of the briefcases was a laptop with all of Knaus’ preparations and details for Sunday’s race. Hendrick Motorsports said the information is encrypted, and Knaus said other member of the No. 48 team had similar notes so the notes aren’t “gone.”

“Unless you are in motorsports, you aren’t going to care too much about the information,” he said. Knaus had photographs of the broken window, as well as the job he did of sealing the window with a garbage bag and tape.

Knaus, who is known to be meticulous in his attention to detail, said jokingly that having the notes stolen might be a boost for Johnson. In 15 career starts on the Sonoma road course, Johnson has just one victory. His average finish is 12th.

“It’s probably a good thing,” he said. “We haven’t run very well here over the last couple of years, so if I don’t have any notes to fall back on, we might come up with something new.’

He didn’t have the entire season of notes on the laptop, only his notes for Sunday’s race.

Knaus said there was also a significant amount of cash in the briefcases, as well as his wife’s art supplies and her laptop. He quipped that if the robbery was an inside job by another team, the culprits would be discovered: “If anybody in the garage just randomly takes up water colors, we’ll know who it was.”

He admitted it was frightening to think about all the personal information on his wife’s laptop — which did not have the same Hendrick security measures — that could now be breached. He also was able to find sympathy for the thief.

“I hope whoever took that stuff really needed it, and can do something with it,” Knaus said. “Take the money and do something good. Maybe they can get their act cleaned up.”

Keidel: Raiders Spend Big On Carr

By Jason Keidel

The Oakland Raiders have slowly flowered from the NFL ashes, from doormat to decent to the edge of dominant. It has taken awhile.

Not too long ago, the Raiders were a sad caricature, led by their iconic and iconoclastic owner, Al Davis, the Brooklyn kid who shook the NFL down to its foundation. Through his ambition and innovation, and for being avant garde regarding race, Davis was well ahead of his time. Until suddenly he wasn’t. He became an old man in a jumpsuit, tooling around on golf carts from one practice to the next. His siren call — Just Win, Baby! — had long echoed out of the Coliseum he crowned for decades.

But now the Raiders (please say “Raydizz” one last time for the old man!) are on the rise, Through diligence, drafts and some serendipity, the Raiders are not just a flashy or trendy club, they are damn good.

And it starts under center. (Doesn’t it always?) They bagged a good QB in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. While the blue-chip studs are often gobbled up in the first round, if not the first few picks, the Raiders struck gold in ’14, hence the serendipity.

Maybe because he played at Fresno State, not considered a hotbed of Hall-of-Fame quarterbacks (forgive us, Trent Dilfer). Maybe because his brother, David, didn’t fare so well, particularly for a No. 1 pick. Maybe because they felt this QB apple didn’t fall far enough from the family tree.

Whatever the logic, 31 teams passed on a franchise quarterback, which is what Derek Carr is. So, the Raiders, now born-again prescient, just signed Carr to a five-year, $125 million deal. We know there’s more fine print on an NFL contract than the rolling credits after a Star Wars movie. But Carr will likely see every nickel of this deal, of which $72.2 million is guaranteed, according to Spotrac. At 26, he hasn’t even hit his prime, and he’s already primed to get the Raiders deep into the playoffs.

If not for a freak injury — a snapped right fibula near the end of a 33-14 romp over the Colts — at the end of the 2016 season, perhaps the Raiders rumble toward the Super Bowl, and not the New England Patriots. Perhaps it’s premature. But the larger point is: the Raiders are ready.

They have the best offensive line north of Dallas. They have a freak of athletic nature in Khalil Mack, who’s already the NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and arguably the best defender in the NFL, or a head behind JJ Watt.

Oakland predictably fizzled without Carr in the playoffs, losing to a Houston Texans team that also played without a stud QB. But there’s no sense or suggestion that Carr will be anything less than 100 percent in 2017, which is good news for the natives in northern California, and ominous for the rest of the NFL.

Even those who abhor the Raiders, as they might the Cowboys, Yankees or Lakers, must admit their resurgence is good for football. Watching a game filled with equal portions of loving and loathing is what makes sports churn forward.

And they have the key to their renewed Commitment to Excellence — Carr, whom, according to NFL.com’s Greg Rosenthal, is actually underpaid at $25 million per season. Not only is he Oakland’s first franchise quarterback since Ken Stabler left town 11 years before Carr was born, he tied Peyton Manning for the most fourth-quarter comebacks over a two-year period, with 11 since 2015.

And, as Rosenthal asserts, Carr is the 14th NFL signal-caller to make at least $20 million per season. So while the brass in Green Bay and Atlanta wince while reading the particulars, knowing that Aaron Rodgers will command Bill Gates money, and Super Bowl QB Matt Ryan will command something in that range, Carr hardly broke the bank, or any records. Heck, Kirk Cousins makes more than Rodgers, Drew Brees or Andrew Luck.

When Rosenthal asked NFL insider Ian Rappaport what Carr would attract on the open market, he said considerably more. And let neither us nor the Raiders feign ignorance or innocence here. For the first three years of his NFL career, Carr made a combined $4.3 million, which, by NFL standards, is a coin kept between sofa cushions.

Carr is not only an excellent passer and excellent player, he’s a football geek of the highest order. No posse, no entourage, no demands, no worries. He speaks in team-first platitudes at all times, and he’s the rare player who means them.

It has to be bittersweet for the franchise and fans, knowing how good they’re about to become together, right before they part ways. The Raiders will flee again, this time for the Vegas Strip, where the autumn wind blows one more pirate into a place renowned for mercenaries, marriages and divorces.

But for this year, at least, the team and town are together. And they have their franchise quarterback. For one more year, in Oakland, it might just be time to win, baby.

Northbound Golden Gate Bridge To Close During San Francisco Marathon

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Security concerns are going to prompt a major traffic change at this year’s upcoming San Francisco Marathon.

Some drivers who normally go across the golden gate bridge will need to find another route during next month’s race.

The northbound side will be closed.

Recent terror attacks are prompting this extra measure of security.

The closure of northbound traffic on the bridge is scheduled for Sunday, July 23. There will be no way to cross from San Francisco to Marin County between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. while the footrace is taking place.

The San Francisco Marathon been going strong for 40 years and, for the past 13, runners have taken over 2 lanes of northbound traffic, leaving one as a buffer, and another for northbound vehicles.

But several recent terror attacks involving drivers plowing into large groups of people have golden gate bridge authorities taking note.

I think it was time to take pause, revisit the safety and see if we can do this in a safer manner, said Golden Gate Bridge District Capt. Lisa Locati.

She said the change is not just over terror concerns.

You read every day in the paper about distracted drivers and impaired drivers or simply those who have a medical condition that happens when they’re driving, explained Locati.

Golden Gate Transit busses will still be running northbound on July 23rd. Drivers who need to get to marin county from San Francisco will have to head through the East Bay.

The normal number of northbound cars between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. on a Sunday is about 4,500.

The Golden Gate Bridge District is planning a huge media blitz so drivers have the chance to make other plans for July 23rd.

U.S. Military Pushes To Delay Transgender Enlistments By 6 Months

WASHINGTON (AP) — Military chiefs will seek a six-month delay before letting transgender people enlist in their services, officials said Friday.

After meetings this week, the service leaders hammered out an agreement that rejected Army and Air Force requests for a two-year wait and reflected broader concerns that a longer delay would trigger criticism on Capitol Hill, officials familiar with the talks told The Associated Press.

The new request for a delay will go to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis for a final decision, said the officials, who weren’t authorized to discuss the internal deliberations publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Transgender servicemembers have been able to serve openly in the military since last year, when former Defense Secretary Ash Carter ended the ban, declaring it the right thing to do. Since Oct. 1, transgender troops have been able to receive medical care and start formally changing their gender identifications in the Pentagon’s personnel system.

But Carter also gave the services until July 1 to develop policies to allow people already identifying as transgender to newly join the military, if they meet physical, medical and other standards, and have been stable in their identified genders for 18 months. The military chiefs had said they needed time to study the issue and its effects on the readiness of the force before taking that step.

Officials said Friday that the chiefs believe the extra half-year would give the four military services time to gauge if currently serving transgender troops are facing problems and what necessary changes the military bases might have to make.

The chiefs of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps discussed the matter with Deputy Defense Secretary Robert Work on Thursday, officials said.

Dana White, the Pentagon’s chief spokeswoman, said there have been ongoing discussions with the service chiefs and a recommendation is expected, but she declined to disclose any details.

“It’s been a very deliberative process,” she said. “The deputy secretary of defense has not submitted a recommendation to the secretary yet and so no decision has been made.”

Stephen Peters, spokesman for Human Rights Campaign, said the group is disappointed with the delay request.

“Each day that passes without implementing the final piece of this important policy harms our military readiness and restricts the Armed Forces’ ability to recruit the best and the brightest,” said Peters, a Marine veteran. “There are thousands of transgender service members openly and proudly serving our nation today, and as they’ve proven time and time again, what matters is the ability to get the job done — not their gender identity.”

Already, there are as many as 250 servicemembers in the process of transitioning to their preferred genders or who have been approved to formally change gender within the Pentagon’s personnel system, according to several defense officials.

According to several officials familiar with the matter, three of the four services wanted more time. In recent weeks, Navy officials suggested they would be ready to begin enlistment in July but asked for a one-year delay, largely to accommodate a request from the Marine Corps for more time, officials said. The Navy secretary also oversees the Marine Corps.

The Army and Air Force wanted a two-year delay to further study the issue, said the officials, who were not authorized to talk about the internal discussion publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Officials said there was a broad recognition that allowing transgender individuals to enlist affects each service differently. They described the biggest challenge as the infantry. They said the discussions aimed at a solution that would give recruits the best chance of succeeding, while ensuring the services maintain the best standards for entry into the military.

Service chiefs will also require that transgender recruits be stable in their preferred genders for at least two years, an increase from Carter’s earlier plan to allow 18 months, the officials said. The chiefs also want to review the policy in a year to see how things are working, the officials said.

Key concerns are whether currently enlisted troops have had medical or other issues that cause delays or problems with their ability to deploy or meet physical or other standards for their jobs. Military leaders also want to review how transgender troops are treated, if they’re discriminated against or have had disciplinary problems, the officials said.

Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a Senate committee last week there have been some issues identified with recruiting transgender individuals that “some of the service chiefs believe need to be resolved before we move forward.” He said Mattis is reviewing the matter.

The military services have various ways of counting the number of transgender troops currently serving. The Pentagon has refused to release any data. But officials said there are 42 servicemembers across the Army, including the National Guard and Reserve, who have been approved to change their gender identities in the personnel system. At least 40 more are in the process of transitioning, they said.

Officials said there are about 160 sailors in the Navy who are somewhere in the process of gender transition. That could include counseling, hormone treatment or gender reassignment surgery. And about “a handful” of Marines have come forward to seek medical care involving gender transition, and there are possibly others going through the process with their commanders, officials said.

The Air Force refused to release any numbers, and other officials did not know those details.

A RAND study found that there are between 2,500 and 7,000 transgender service members in the active duty military, and another 1,500 to 4,000 in the reserves.

Google To Stop Reading Your Gmail To Help Sell Ads

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google is going to stop reading your Gmail in search of opportunities to sell ads.

The change announced Friday will end a practice that Google has embraced since the company introduced Gmail in 2004. The practice has raised concerns among privacy watchdogs and creeped out some users.

To help finance the free service, Google has been scanning through what Gmail users were discussing and then showing ads connected to some of the topics. Someone writing about running, for instance, might see ads for Nike or Asics shoes.

Google still plans to show ads within Gmail. But instead of scanning through email content, the company’s software will rely on other signals to determine which ads are most likely to appeal to each of its 1.2 billion Gmail users.

The Mountain View, California, company said it would stop the ad-driven scanning of Gmail later this year.

Google says it’s changing course so its free Gmail service operates more like the subscription version that it has sold to more than 3 million companies. The paid Gmail doesn’t include ads, so the company has never tried to scan the content of those users’ emails for marketing purposes.

Yet some business customers might have believed incorrectly that Google was scanning those accounts as well. By ending all scanning, Google can put such concerns to rest as it tries to sell the service to even more businesses.

Gmail now ranks as the world’s largest email service, an indication that most people didn’t care about Google’s scanning methods. Both Microsoft and Apple have publicly skewered Google for having the audacity to mine users’ emails for ad sales, but those attacks didn’t undercut Gmail’s popularity.
